Ben Affleck as Batman in Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice

Batman “more than a vigilante” in Batman V Superman

Previous sources have hinted that Ben Affleck’s Batman appearing in Batman V Superman will have been in the cowl for some time already. What we’ve seen in the trailer suggests that Batman will have an emphatic hold on Gotham’s criminal element and will be quite eager to challenge Superman.

Producer Charles Roven recently spoke to Empire to explain Batman’s mentality a little more explicitly. “[Batman] is not giving people a chance. He is more than a vigilante. He has become not only the cop, if you will, he has also become the jury and executioner.”

Since Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan’s Batman is the most recent incarnation of the caped crusader on screen, Roven also talked about Affleck and Zack Snyder’s Batman will be different. “He’s older, [and] he’s seen the worst of what man can do. He’s been darkened by it, he’s tougher, he’s angrier, I guess. He’s still lost those that are near and dear to him, and not necessarily from old age or disease.”

So their way of distinguishing themselves form the dark and edgy, but realistic Nolan Batman is to make their Batman even darker and edgier but with Znyder style?

Angrier? Do you not remember “WHERSH DA TRIGRRRRR?! WHERISSHIT?!” From The Dark Knight Rises?

Ugh, fine. We can at least hope that the movie will do a good job of making us sympathetic to Batman’s motivations. On that note it will be interesting to see how the movie invites us to feel about both Batman and Superman’s perspectives. Who will it invite us to root for especially in the early acts when we know they are both supposed to be the good guys.

Hopefully the answers will be worthwhile when Batman V Superman premieres’ March 25th.
