Supergirl has had more than a few different incarnations since her debut in 1959, but to think of Supergirl is to imagine a strong, beautiful, blonde superheroine. Her origin story and familial relations have also been re-written through the decades. The most popular and enduring version of Supergirl is Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin who shares his super powers and as well as his weakness to Kryptonite. She was mostly a support character until she got a leading role in Adventure Comics in 1969. In 1972, she starred in her own eponymous comic book series, which only ran for two years. It was revived in the 1980’s, again for a run of two years. She was killed off in 1985 due to editorial changes, and ret-conned out of existence when it was decided that Superman was to be the only survivor of Krypton. Then, thankfully, in 2004, a modern version of Kara Zor-El was reintroduced, and she’s been an active part of the DC Comics world ever since.

As part of the New 52, Kara’s origin was rebooted once again. She is the still the Kryptonian cousin of Kal-El, but many other details of her origin and backstory have been changed or omitted. Thus far, there has been no mention of Kara’s previous adventures, and it appears any events that happened between her 2004 reintroduction the New 52 reboot have been removed from continuity.

Besides the comics, Supergirl has appeared as a character on the television show Smallville, in an eponymous 1984 film, in Superman: The Animated Series, as well as Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, and as a playable character in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, Infinite Crisis, and Injustice: Gods Among Us. And, a new, live action, Supergirl television show is currently in production for CBS. If the rumors about the forthcoming show are true, Supergirl’s history will rebooted yet again, though how much it will stray from established canon is yet to be seen. The important thing is that there WILL be a Supergirl show and that we can all look forward to having a comic-adaptation from DC with a fabulous female lead.

It’s the red and blue costume and blonde hair that signifies Supergirl. Here, cosplayer Carrie Lachance gives Supergirl a sexy edge with an incredible latex costume and kickass platform boots. The high stiletto heels really show off Carrie’s amazing legs. She has a strong, fit body that is well suited to both the character and the costume. Latex is difficult to get on, but very comfortable when worn. It’s shiny, sleek, and fits like a second skin – exactly how comic book characters’ costumes appear on the page. Carrie’s got the look down pat. Her hair, face, and body are perfect for Supergirl. And the look she gives to the camera is right on point with Supergirl’s attitude. The whole picture reads powerful – and defiant – just like the Kara El-Zor we’ve come to know.
