Even though there were rumors about it being real for awhile leading up to the game’s announcement, the fact that Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite was announced at the PlayStation Experience made my day. While I wouldn’t call myself an expert of the genre, I do have a soft spot in my heart for fighting games, especially for games that pair a two or more franchises together and have them duke it out, like InjusticeSuper Smash Bros., and of course, the Vs. series.

Though we’re still slowly getting information about the game, such as the use of the Infinity Gems and six confirmed characters (Captain America, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Morrigan, Mega Man X, and Ryu), there is a lot that we don’t know, specifically what the final roster will be. While I’m sure Capcom will reveal the roster little by little (or it’ll get leaked), there was a rumor going around saying that the game will focus more on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and some of their lesser known properties, which means more Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers, and less X-Men.

And so with that to consider, and with the game still fresh in my mind, I thought I would share with you dear readers the five characters that need to be in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite (don’t worry, I’ll include Capcom in it’s own list later). But this isn’t like any list you’ve seen before; no, these are ten characters that have never appeared in a Vs. game before, so don’t expect the usual suspects like Deadpool, Spider-Man, etc.  It’s time for some new heroes to take us for a ride.

Groot

In Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Guardians of the Galaxy finally got some needed representation with the inclusion of Rocket Raccoon. For many, this was their first exposure to this often overlooked series, and not long after The Guardians of the Galaxy movie propelled Star Lord and his band of likable heroes into the mainstream. Heck, the buzz surrounding the teaser trailer was one of the highest in 2016, according to director James Gunn. So it makes perfect sense that Marvel build on that momentum and add another Guardians character, specifically everyone’s favorite sentient tree creature: Groot.

While there aren’t many styles that Capcom could give to Groot, since he’s not really a fast character, the two that I think work the best are either making Groot a zone character, where in he can throw out seeds that grow into plants that damage opponents from a distance, or he could be a brawler, using vines to pull in his opponent for a few hits and a throw. Heck, if you want to get really creative, maybe play around with his ability to die and get reborn as a sprig, where his smaller version is weaker but he can move a lot faster than his grown up version. Regardless of what happens, Groot is definitely a no brainer, and could definitely be one of the more unique characters on the roster.

Avengers Age of Ultron: Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

Black Widow

Of all the characters on this list, Black Widow is probably one of the safer inclusions. I mean, while Scarlett Johansson isn’t the first one to portray the famous Marvel assassin, it is her portrayal of Black Widow that made the character incredibly popular in recent years, for multiple reasons. The only real question is how she would play. While she is good with guns, she’s also good at hand to hand combat, excellent reflexes, and even has a few gadgets. Focusing on one thing over the others would hurt the character, so what’s Capcom to do? Thankfully, there’s a solution.

In Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Jill Valentine returned in her Resident Evil 5 designed. But here design wasn’t the only thing that changed between Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, as Jill’s fighting style changed from using guns and grenades to using quick up close acrobatic moves like flip kicks and cartwheels; sure, she still used guns, but it was here ability to move in close and take on enemies was the focus of her play style, complete with a unique Feral Crouch attack, which let her pull of different techniques while this pose depending on the buttons pressed. Black Widow could play just, minus entering a crouch. With her speed and agility, Black Widow could easily rush down an opponent with her punches and kicks into some crazy combos and air juggles, while at the same time keeping them away from her with a few shots of a gun. Heck, combined with her unique Widow’s Bite static energy blasts, which could be used to stun opponents, and I can see Black Widow being used quite frequently in competitive play.

Spider-Gwen in Marvel Ultimate Spider-Man

Spider-Gwen

Okay, so regardless of whether or not the rumor about the game focusing more on the Marvel Cinematic Universe is true, I think it’s a safe bet to say that Spider-Man is going to get in; to not include him would be like not including Batman in a DC game, or Mario in any Super Smash Bros. But I have a crazy idea: what if Spider-Man isn’t the only wall crawler added to the game? What if another popular web slinger was added to the game, specifically Earth-65 Spider-Woman, who you may know as Spider-Gwen?

I know it’s pretty easy to write Spider-Gwen off as just a female version of Spidey, but as her fans known, there’s so much more to her than meets the eye. For starters, in the comics, she lost her powers and has to use special isotopes to temporarily give her power. Perhaps that can be incorporated into her moveset, where using an isotope grants special buffs at the cost of certain debuffs, like Shulk in Super Smash Bros. Or, if that doesn’t seem plausible because of the Infinity Gems, maybe incorporate her wristwatch that lets her travel to other dimensions into her moveset, like letting her use to get close to an opponent, or have her summon Spider-Men and Women from other dimensions to help her out in a Hyper Combo. There’s no question that Spider-Man will make it into the game, but to not include Spider-Gwen would be a shame, especially since she can do things that not even a spider can.

daredevil

Daredevil

Honestly, anyone who’s had or will have a show on Netflix like Luke Cage, The Punisher, and Jessica Jones could be on this list. But of all the characters that have been getting gritty TV shows, The Man Without Fear easily gets my vote. Not because I’m a huge fan of him, but because he brings something interesting to the table. And no I’m not talking about the fact that he’s blind.

Rather I’m focusing on his heightened senses, which are the result of his blindness. Besides his kung-fu skills and his baton, Daredevil’s most famous ability that all his senses except his sight are amped up to eleven, so why not use that in some kind of cool countering system? Like whenever he uses one of his heightened senses, he can then counter an opponent’s attacks with a few quick punches of his own? With something like that, you’d be adding a unique risk/reward system to how he plays: do you go in and bait your opponent to attack, or do you wait for them to come to you? In the hands of a pro, Daredevil could really tear up the competitive scene, and even if they don’t use his senses in some way, Capcom could always fall back on the tired and true nimble fighter with a ranged weapon (i.e. his baton). Regardless of how you look at it (no pun intended), Daredevil is definitely a great inclusion.

Wesley Snipes Blade

Blade

So funny story about Blade. There have been rumors going around that Blade was considered for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but was ultimately scrapped in both it and the Ultimate version (though he did show up in Jill Valentine’s ending), apparently because there were already too many characters that used a combination of swords and guns, such as Dante, Deadpool, Chris Redfield, etc. Instead of the day walker, we got Johnny Blaze’s Ghost Rider, which while still a great character and one I would love to see return in Infinite, just isn’t the same as Blade. With the new game, it’s time to rectify that.

Okay, out of all the characters on this list, Blade is probably the only one that isn’t going to happen, especially since he hasn’t been relevant for awhile. But at the same time, his use of swords and blades, while not exactly original, is still really cool, giving him a ton of options to work with like cool air combos and excellent zoning options. It would be especially cool if they do something with his half vampire powers, like giving him a special mode where he gives into his vampire instincts and has increased power, speed, and can suck the blood of an opponent for health. Okay, what I just described was Dante’s playstyle in MvC 3 an Ultimate, but considering Blade debuted in the 70s, it hardly seems fair to call him a Dante clone, wouldn’t you say? Plus, if enough people like him in this, maybe that would encourage Marvel to make a new movie? Pretty please Marvel?

These are just a very small handful of  new characters on the Marvel side that I could come up with. I’m sure there are some heroes that you can think of that I missed that you’d love to see, like Black Panther, Falcon, Squirrel Girl, or even some villains that you’d like to see shine, like Bullseye, Kingpin, or even Doctor Octopus. Regardless of who you want to see, I think we can all agree that the idea of seeing some of Marvel’s finest take on Capcom’s finest once again is an incredibly exciting endeavor, and next week, I’ll be discussing the five characters I’d like to see on the Capcom side of things. But until next time true believers, take it easy.
