Adding DLC to Pokémon would “ruin the worldview” of the series

Pokémon Art director Ken Sugimori says that adding DLC would fundamentally break the games. In a recent interview with 4Gamer Sugimori explained that downloadable content is not in line with the core ethos of the Pokémon world. “When it comes to business, the one thing I’ve always said no to is the act of buying Pokémon with money, the reason being is because it’s one of [the] things that could ruin the worldview of Pokémon.”

The first Pokémon games ever to be released were Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Green way back in 1996 and since then it’s a franchise that is near and dear to many a gamers heart. Sugimori said that “I believe the reason we don’t simply commercialize [Pokémon] is that it’s a way of protecting the brand.” The two latest installments of Pokémon, Pokémon X and Y are currently selling by the truck load and you have to ask if it’s worked for the last 17 years does Nintendo really need to start monetising the franchise now? What do you think is notion of “Gotta Catch ’em All” still relevant in this modern age or does the idea of buying them outright seem more appealing?
