When it was first announced, Hyrule Warriors Legends looked like it would be nothing more than Hyrule Warriors, but on a handheld instead of the home console. That was quickly revealed not to be the case, as two characters from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker would also be added to the roster, Tetra and the King of Red Lions. Today, we learned that a third character from the Gamecube classic would be joining the roster, as Toon Link will also be playable in Hyrule Warriors Legends.

The news comes courtesy of Japanese magazine Famitsu, who revealed that while Toon Link won’t be playable in the Legend Mode (the game’s story mode), he will be available for all the other modes that game has to offer. In addition, some new info was revealed about a new set of story missions that take place within the Wind Waker timeline of the series (it’s complicated), and will star Tetra and the King of Red Lions, and will involve a fight with the Helmaroc King, the fearsome giant bird in The Legend of Zelda: The Waker. As someone who considers The Wind Waker as his all time favorite Zelda game, this news pleases me greatly.

Hyrule Warriors Legends is set to release in the West sometime next year exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS. Players who own both the Wii U version (which is available now) and the 3DS version can transfer the 3DS exclusive characters into the Wii U version.
