Skylanders Franchise Surpasses $2 Billion in Sales
Activision has just announced that the Skylanders franchise has grossed more than $2 billion dollars as of December 31, 2013. This news comes from Activision’s quarterly financial report and includes sales across all available platforms. Since Skylanders debuted in 2011 Activision have sold an estimated 175 million Skylanders toys which no doubt helped push the franchise to the number two spot for bestselling game of 2013.
After surviving the release of Disney Infinity Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg explained that the Skylanders success hinges upon, “magical innovations,” and that, “That magic moment of toys coming to life in the first game [is what] captivated young gamers.” He goes on to say, “We saw their eyes pop out of their heads. We knew that we couldn’t rest on our laurels. We needed to continue to deliver those kinds of novel, magnetic moments, and so with Swap Force, we’re showing that we’re not taking anything for granted. We’re not just doing a different version of the same game. We’re adding to the mechanic and adding to the genre.”
