Skyrim Saves Will Transfer Over To Special Edition, So Long As You Weren’t Using Mods

Bethesda has stated that save files from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would transfer over the the new Skryim Special Edition. The one catch to this is that save files won’t transfer if you were using mods.

Moving save files over from Skyirm to the new Special Edition is simple; you simply move your original save files into the new folder. One example would be moving it from  (My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Saves) to (/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/Saves). Before you do transfer files, you will first have to start Skyrim Special Edition.

Unfortunately, if you used mods the save file will not work. A message will appear that says relies on content that is no longer present,” while you can attempt to continue, it likely will not function properly. While it is possible this will change in the future as those mods are re-made for the new Special Edition, it is likely those save files will never work. It is best to just start form scratch and use the new mods as they appear.

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 also support mods this time around. While they do come with some restrictions, it is nice to see consoles begin joining in on the ability to download mods. Skyrim Special Edition is out now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
