Do you like Super Mario Bros? Do yearn for the days of arcade shooters such as Gradius and R-Type? If you answered yes to both those questions, then you’ll be happy to know that thanks to the tools in the upcoming Super Mario Maker, you’ll be able to make your own Mario themed side-scrolling shooter, as this new video for the game shows.

Courtesy of the folks over at GameXplain, the video (which you can check out below) shows just how versatile the tools of Super Mario Maker can be, as a side scrolling level was made using the Clown Car to fly, various Mario enemies such as Spinies, Bo-ombs, and Dry Bones as enemies (all of which are flying by the way), and the always classic Fire Flower as the shot. The stage ends with a boss fight against a giant flying Bowser Jr., complete with Super Mario Bros. 3 boss music. If you think you can make your own side-scrolling shooter, or want to try your hand at other genres, you’ll get your chance when Super Mario Maker releases exclusively for the Wii U September 11th of this year. Personally, I’m looking forward to making a Mario version of the first level of Contra.
