The Infamous Super Mario Bros. Movie Is Getting A Limited Edition Re-Release

Normally we don’t talk much about movies here in the gaming section, but this is a special case. The Super Mario Bros. movie, the first live action movie based on a video game, is getting a special re-release next February; just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Released in 1993, the film stars Bob Hoskins and John Leguziamo as the titular bros Mario and Luigi, Dennis Hopper as King Koopa, and Samanta Mathis as Princess Daisy. Though it was panned when it was first released, it’s since gained a cult following of fans, who will surely get a kick out of this. Besides getting it in a really nice case, the Blu-Ray re-release will also come with a special one hour documentary called “This Ain’t No Game”, as well as some behind the scene features.

Sounds good right? Well, here’s the bad(ish) news. As of time of this writing, it’s only available for pre-order by UK retailer Zavi, meaning that if you live outside of the UK and want to see it, not only are you going to have to import it, but you’ll also have to keep an eye on region locking, so keep that in mind. The Blu-Ray is expected to release on February 13th, 2017.

For me personally, I tend to go back and forth on this. Even though I knew it had little to do with the games, I loved the movie as a kid, though as I got older that nostalgia started to wear off. While it’s objectively a bad movie, it’s still better than most movies based on video games, and the history behind it’s creation is quite fascinating, like the fact that Tom Hanks was originally set to play Mario, or that Disney helped fund the movie because they wanted to use it as an excuse to get Mario characters into Disney theme parks, which is made even more nuts considering what Nintendo is doing right now with Universal. The more you know.
