After almost four months of beta testing Valve has finally launched its Steam In-Home Streaming service which allows users to play their favorite PC games on less powerful machines that are connected to more powerful machines via a standard home network. “When you play a game using In-Home Streaming, video and audio are sent through your home network from your high-end gaming PC to another device in your home. From here, your keyboard, mouse, and controller input is sent back to the remote computer.”
In-Home Streaming is of course all part of Valve’s big push to take hold of the living room, but surely this new service almost completely removes the need for users to invest in a Steam Box? If gamers can now stream games via their home network to, “lower-end computers, such as a laptop or home theater PC,” then surely it would be a lot cheaper to plug an old netbook into your TV via HDMI and then stream content that way, what reason do I have to invest upwards of $499 in a Steam Machine?
