Fallout 4’s Crafting System is Completely Optional

Fallout 4 is getting a new crafting system, which enables players to create just about anything they want in game, from new guns to even new houses and buildings. And according to Bethesda’s Pete Hines, the feature will be completely optional for players who don’t want to use it, though he encourages players to do so.

“It’s a completely optional, freeform thing that you can do, if that’s what you want to do,” he explained in an interview with GamesRadar. “If you don’t care about that and you just want to play quests and play side quests, and finish the main quest and that sort of thing then you can just ignore all of this [crafting]. Or do as much or as little as you want. There is a benefit to it,but again it doesn’t prevent you from playing through the game. If you don’t want to build any parts for your weapon, you can just use stuff you get off other people or buy stuff from merchants that you find and play through the game. You can [play] it and never even notice that feature is there if you want to, but once you figure it out, it’s like, ‘okay, this is pretty cool. Now I want to do more’.”

Whether you want to build your own guns and towns or just want to mow down Super Mutants is up to you as the player, but you’ll be to do both when Fallout 4 releases on November 11th of this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
