J.K. Rowling Shares Draco Malfoy’s Life Story on Pottermore

Draco Malfoy is one character who evolves in mischievous ways throughout his time at Hogwarts. Now, author J.K. Rowling has shared more details about Malfoy’s life on her Pottermore website.

His parents are just plain rotten and, because he is an only child, he becomes spoiled. In the end, he sides with the wrong man and Harry Potter is the conqueror.

So far, we know that Draco idolizes his father. He is also envious of Harry’s popularity and of how easy flying is to him. He has also questioned his alliances with Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Oops! We said his name. Draco found himself skilled at Occlumency, which helped him excel at undercover work. He also has a thing for Purebloods, that’s a given. Draco later marries Astoria Greengrass who also holds a low tolerance for Mudbloods. Astoria “refused to raise their grandson Scorpius in the belief that Muggles were scum, [so] family gatherings were often fraught with tension.”

The explanation for his success with Occlumency allowed him to shut down certain elements as well, proving he can be good at something. “He would find it easy to shut down emotion, to compartmentalise, and to deny essential parts of himself […] I was attempting to show that the denial of pain and the suppression of inner conflict can only lead to a damaged person (who is much more likely to inflict damage on other people.)”
