The Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the X-Men series and The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, are a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, we get to see three or four awesome superhero movies every year. But on the other hand, perhaps with the exception of the X-Men series, most of the superhero films tend to stick to what they know and are hesitant to introduce new characters. X-Men does a great job at putting new characters into each of the films, and hit an absolute home run with Quicksilver in Days of Future Past. And, while it is still exciting every time a new trailer is announced for the next Marvel movie, Iron Man, Thor, and the rest of the bunch are starting to get just a little bit old.

But if Guardians of the Galaxy taught us anything, it is that Marvel is absolutely capable of introducing entirely new characters, and making audiences remember them. So listen up, Marvel. Here are the top 10 characters that totally need to be introduced (or re-introduced) into the Marvel movie world:

10. Shuma Gorath

Marvel Shuma Gorath

Image: ComicVine

Who is he?
Shuma Gorath is like a hybrid between the Kraken and Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc. But don’t let that description fool you. Shuma Gorath is a multi-dimensional being that once ruled over the entire earth, surviving on the blood sacrifices of earth’s inhabitants. How’s that for hardcore?

He is a key villain in the Doctor Strange storyline, and at one point tries to be born on the earth through the consciousness the Ancient One, Doctor Strange’s mentor. Doctor Strange and Shuma Gorath often duke it out, and Strange must always use unconventional means to defeat him.

Why him/it?
With Marvel Phase 3 starting in 2016, and with work on the Doctor Strange movie underway, this seems like a pretty great pick. There are more prominent villains in the Doctor Strange story arcs though, so Shuma Gorath would probably be better suited somewhere further down the line than the introductory film.

9. Rachel Summers

Marvel's Rachel Summers

Who is she?
Rachel Grey is the daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey from the Days of Future Past alternate timeline. She inherited Jean Grey’s telekinetic and telepathic abilities.

In the main timeline, Jean Grey was consumed by the powers of the Dark Phoenix because of her family’s decision to cast her out upon discovering her mutation. This ultimately led to her death, as seen in X-Men: The Last Stand. However, in Rachel’s timeline, Jean and her family were more receptive to her mutant abilities, and Jean learned to control the Phoenix. Due to this, Rachel is also able to use the abilities of the Phoenix.

Why her?
Rachel Summers would work really well in the X-Men films now that the Days of Future Past story arc has been completed. It would also be a cool back story if they were to tell it as it currently exists.

Also, introducing Summers could help to redeem Jean and Scott a bit. They are actually pretty cool characters, but we all hated them by the end of the trilogy. Maybe their daughter could pick up the slack.

8. Valkyrie

Marvel's Valkyrie

Who is she?
Valkyrie can be a bit confusing, but doesn’t have to be. The original Valkyrie was an Asgardian named Brunnhilde, leader of the Valkyrior, a troop of female warriors. Under the guise of friendship, Amora the Enchantress imprisons Brunnhilde and separates her soul from her body, and then inserts her soul into others, creating other forms of the Valkyrie.

Eventually, which Doctor Strange’s help, Brunnhilde’s spirit and body reunite. Okay, take a deep breath, and let’s continue.

Valkyrie’s powers include superhuman strength and stamina, incredible close combat skills, and the ability to perceive auras of death. Not to mention, she has an enchanted sword and rides a winged horse named Aragorn. Epic.

Why her?
Two important facts about the Phase 3 Thor movie were recently revealed. First is that Natalie Portman is out, which makes room for Valkyrie as a love interest for Thor. Second is that Amora the Enchantress will play an important role in the movie. Considering the relationship between Valkyrie and Amora, this character seems like a great idea. The movie is also rumored to feature the Ragnorok storyline, in which Valkyrie plays a key role.

7. Flash Thompson

Marvel's Venom aka Flash Thompson

Who is he?
Remember the guy from 2002’s Spider-Man who tried to beat the crap out of Peter Parker at school? That’s him, and he’s actually pretty cool. Although he’s nothing short of a jerk to Parker, he is actually a huge fan of Spider-Man, and he and Parker end up being pretty good friends during college. He eventually is bonded with the Venom symbiote under close government regulations. Having Venom actually end up being a good guy would work really well if he teams up with Spidey to fight against Carnage. And I think we all want Carnage.

Why him?
Last year, Sony announced a slew of spinoffs from The Amazing Spider-Man series. One of those spinoffs will apparently be a Venom movie. There are several options for hosts for the Venom symbiote, and Flash could work really well. He’s a cool guy, and his military service is relatable and could be a great addition to the Venom film. We all know how badly Sam Raimi butchered Venom in Spider-Man 3. Maybe this is a good time to take another shot.

6. Cloak and Dagger

Marvel's Cloak and Dagger

Who are they?
Cloak and Dagger are one of the coolest super-duos ever. Cloak is able to gain power from the Darkforce dimension, and can teleport and make himself intangible. Dagger, on the other hand, is able to form daggers of pure light, and can use these to either hurt or heal. The two form a perfect combination, and rely on each other to survive. Because of Cloak’s attachment to the Darkforce, he often “hungers” for light, which Dagger gives him through her, well, daggers. This also prevents Dagger from becoming too overpowered by light. Their light/dark, black/white juxtaposition is super attractive, and their powers are just as awesome.

Why them?
Cloak and Dagger join Captain America’s side during the Civil War story arc, and since it was recently announced that Captain America 3 would be focusing on that same story, Cloak and Dagger would be an impressive addition to Cap’s roster of heroes.

5. Nova

Marvel's Nova

Who is he?
Richard Rider was just a normal teenage guy living in New York City (of course, because where else would a soon-to-be superhero live?) when Rhomann Dey chooses him at random to inherit all of Dey’s powers before his death. Rider becomes Nova and joins the Nova Corps.

While fighting to defend Xandar, a large-scale attack annihilates the entire Nova Corps, except for Nova himself. He then gains the cumulative powers of all the deceased Nova Corps agents. He inherits superhuman strength and speed, as well as the power of flight, all of which are fueled by the Nova-Force.

Why him?
This one just makes sense. Nova is a fun and proud character, and Guardians of the Galaxy set the perfect backdrop for Nova to be introduced. We have seen the planet Xandar, Rhomann Dey, and the Nova Corps. Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax all eventually fight alongside Nova as well. Everything has been set up perfectly for Nova’s introduction.

4. Silk

Marvel's Silk

Who is she?
Silk/Cindy Moon is a brand new character introduced into the Amazing Spider-Man comics in Summer 2014. In a crazy twist of fate, the same spider that bit Peter Parker and gave him his powers also bit Cindy, giving her very similar powers. But Ezekiel Sims held her in hiding for years to protect her from the supervillain Morlun. Silk eventually comes out of hiding, and becomes partners with Spider-Man (in more than one way).

The biggest difference between Spidey and Silk’s abilities is Silk’s capacity to shoot organic webbing from her fingertips, rather than Spidey’s artificial webbing. Silk is also not as physically strong as Spider-Man, but much, much faster.

Why her?
An addition to the Venom/Carnage spinoff, Sony seems pretty dead-set on making a Spider-Man spinoff featuring a female lead. But Spider-Woman is more attached to the Avengers universe than the Spider-Man one, and Spider-Girl is the daughter of Parker and Mary-Jane. The Spidey reboot movies haven’t even introduced MJ yet, so that seems unlikely. Because of these facts, Silk seems like a good choice. She’s fresh and relatively unknown, and putting a fresh face into The Amazing Spider-Man would be a great thing.

3. Black Cat

Marvel's Black Cat

Who is she?
Maybe you’re a bit of a Spider-Man purist, and that’s okay. If that’s the case, than you’d probably rather see Black Cat in a Spidey spinoff rather than Silk. Black Cat is Marvel’s Catwoman. She is a slick and sexy thief, and occasional love interest/pain in the backside of Spider-Man. She is an interesting character, because it’s never really clear whether she’s a good guy or a bad guy. She’s a great anti-hero. She also doesn’t have any “powers” to speak of, but has a great skill set that enhances her abilities as a burglar. She is a talented gymnast, is quick on her feet, and has a great sense of sight and smell.

Why her?
Considering her prominence in the Spider-Man world, it’s surprising that Black Cat hasn’t been in any of the films yet. Felicia Hardy, Black Cat’s alter-ego, had a very very small part in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and due to this, it is very likely that Black Cat will either be the focus of the female-driven Spidey film, or will appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

2. Iron Fist

Marvel's Iron Fist

Image: ComicVine

Who is he?
Iron Fist has a definite Bruce Wayne vibe going for him. Daniel Rand’s parents were killed by one of his father’s business associates, and in order to avenge his parents’ death, Rand learned various forms of martial arts in the mystical city of K’hun-Lun. As his skills grew, Rand wanted to obtain the power of the Iron Fist. To do this, he defeated a powerful dragon, and during this battle he had the image of a dragon burned into his chest. The power of the Iron Fist allows Rand to focus his Chi which enhances various attributes like strength or healing to superhuman levels.

Why him?
Let’s be real for a minute. 2003’s Daredevil was pretty bad. The Elektra spinoff was worse. But Daredevil is actually a pretty great character, and has close ties to Iron Fist and others, like Luke Cage. In just a few months, Marvel’s Daredevil TV show will debut on Netflix. And at this point it look like Luke Cage and Iron Fist will be making appearances, or even getting their own series. Will this prevent them from being put into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let’s hope not.

1. X-23

Marvel's X23

ComicVine

Who is she?
X-23, or Laura Kinney, is a clone made from Wolverine’s DNA, which was extracted at the time of his adamantium bonding. X-23 was created for the same reason as Wolverine — to be a weapon. X-23 was raised to be a killer for hire (against her will). X-23 ultimately escapes and leaves all that she knows behind and travels to New York. She ends up at the School for Gifted Youngsters.

Thanks to her being a clone of Wolverine’s DNA, she possesses all the same powers as he does, with just a few interesting differences. Her cell regeneration ability appears to not be as effective as Wolverine’s, and is more susceptible to injury and death than he is. X-23’s bone claws are also different. She has two claws that come out of each of her knuckles, and one claw that comes out of each of her feet.

Why her?
Bringing in X-23 could allow the X-Men series to deal with some heavy issues like prostitution and self-harm. Also, the X-Men series has done an amazing job in making all of us fall in love with Hugh Jackman, but how long can he actually keep this up? Nobody wants it to happen, but let’s face reality. Jackman has been reported as saying that (assuming Wolverine 3 happens) that he is “99.9% sure” that it will be his last outing as Wolverine. X-23 could be a great way of continuing the feral, wild nature of the Wolverine that series has established so well, but could allow Jackman to pass the reigns to someone new. Pairing these two up seems like a pretty good idea for another Wolverine solo film. Plus, can you imagine the glory of Wolverine teaming up with basically himself?

Who would you like to see in the upcoming Marvel films? Let us know in the comments below.
