It’s a sad day for horror fans. Legendary director Wes Craven, who was responsible for some of the most popular horror films of all time, died today in Los Angeles. Craven passed away at home after a battle with brain cancer. He was 76.

Craven launched his prolific Hollywood career in the 70’s with the film Last House on the Left (1972), and went on to release The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Swamp Thing (1982), The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988), The People Under the Stairs (1991) and many others.

Craven is best known for his horror classics A Nightmare on Elm Street(1984) and Scream (1996). These two franchises spawned numerous sequels, and were credited with reinvigorating the teen horror genre.

In addition to his successful filmmaking career, Craven was a devoted nature lover and conservationist, and a longtime member of the Audubon California Board of Directors. He is survived by his wife, sister, children and grandchildren.
