SDCC 2016: Sega Announces Retro Throwback Sonic Mania

Fans of Sonic have a good reason to be pretty happy right now, since Sega has announced Sonic Mania. This time around, the look to please fans and tap into their nostalgia a little bit by having the game focus on Sonic’s first few adventures.

Sonic Mania combines completely re-imagined iconic Zones from Sonic The HedgehogSonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles. They are not just re-releasing some old Zones though, they are also creating entirely new Zones, Acts, and Bosses so the people who already played through all the games will have a great reason to pick this up and see just what was added.

Sonic Mania was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games,” said Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team. “This type of collaboration is a first for SEGA and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year. Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it.”

Sonic Mania is set to release Spring 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
