Even though Game of Thrones is based on the popular book series by George R.R. Martin, there is always a chance of events happening in the TV series that will not happen in the books. Showbiz411 sat down with George R.R. Martin at the Writers Guild West Awards over the weekend, where they talked about the popular HBO series and about showrunners David Benioff and D.B Weiss. According to Martin, the upcoming fifth season of Game of Thrones could include some deaths that readers of the books are not expecting.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for the upcoming season.

Martin spoke first about viewers can expect from future episodes. “People are going to die who don’t die in the books, so even the book readers will be unhappy,” he said. “Everybody better be on their toes. David and D.B. are even bloodier than I am.”

The original plan for the seven seasons may be flexible, after all. When talking about the chances of another season after six, and even others, Martin said, “Not really certain yet. This is the fifth season, the sixth season HBO picked up last year. We will have a 7th, 8th or 9th, no one knows. They only renew one or two seasons at a time. After we do season 6, maybe we’ll get a renewal for 7th and 8th. That all depends, Television is a very changeable medium.”

This could hint at some deaths in the upcoming season and the long overdue sixth book, The Winds of Winter, will not be hitting shelves this year.
