“Wolverine 3” Begins Filming Early Next Year, Releases 2017

Twentieth Century Fox has made it clear that they would like to like to continue banking on the X-Men franchise for years to come. With X-Men: Apocalypse releasing soon, the follow up Wolverine film would re-team director James Mangold with Hugh Jackman for another solo adventure sometime in 2017. When a movie such as X-Men or Wolverine continues to surpass box office expectations, who wouldn’t want to keep making them?

Jackman has hinted that he is done with some of these movies, and while Wolverine 3 is still untitled, this could be that final movie he has hinted at. Jackman is aging and the role is very physically demanding, so recasting would be a possibility. A young Wolverine was almost cast in X-Men: Days of Future Past, so there is the added and very interesting possibility of the two actors starring alongside one another.

The cross of roles with First Class co-stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy may be the trick to putting a little pep back into Jackman’s step. Jackman did say, “I said to my wife, ‘The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I’ve got to find a way to keep playing him until I die.’ I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor…I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.”

Wolverine 3 is currently in the books for a March 2017 release so it will head into prep near the end of the year or early next year to meet filming deadlines. X-Men: Apocalypse films this year, Deadpool next year and Gambit heads into production after that. We’re assuming that’s when Wolverine 3 takes shape. Fox has also added two more X-Men movies to the list. Oh yeah!
