Sega has been giving their Yakuza series, known as Ryu ga Gotoku in Japan, a lot of love recently. With Yakuza 5 headed to the west, the prequel Yakuza 0 fresh on store shelves, Sega has just announced not only Yakuza 6, but a PlayStation 4 remake of the PlayStation 2 original, rebranded as Yakuza: Kiwami. Released back in 2005, the Yakuza series is quickly approaching its 10 year anniversary, and with an entirely new generation of technology pushing games to their limits, a remake of the original can’t have better timing. Don’t confuse remake with remaster either, while a remaster was released back in 2012 and 2014, this remake features new and expanded scenarios, mini-games, and much much more.
Of course, the elephant in the room is if the game will ever see a western release, which, honestly can’t be said for certain. Sega has always been sketchy when it comes to releasing the Yakuza series stateside, with Yakuza 5 taking three years to see a release outside of Japan. But with renewed interest in the series, and the fact that Yakuza 5 is coming this fall, maybe we won’t have to wait for another console generation before we see Kiwami released west as well.
