Adorable Female Mario Cosplay is a Gem

The Mario series is the best selling video game franchise of all time. Everyone knows Mario, even if they’ve never played any of the Mario games or spin-offs. For those of you who’ve been living under a rock, or just traveled to this era via time machine, Mario is a fictional character, the star of the Mario video game franchise, created by Nintendo’s video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. His blockbuster popularity has led to him serving as Nintendo’s company mascot. Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. He’s depicted as a short, pudgy, Italian plumber who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom, and generally spends his time attempting to rescue Princess Peach from the Koopa villain Bowser, sometimes helped along the way by his younger brother, Luigi.

According to a widely-circulated story, during the localization of Donkey Kong for North American audiences, Nintendo of America’s warehouse landlord, Mario Segale, confronted the then-president of Nintendo America about back rent for the warehouse. Following a heated argument, the Nintendo employees decided to name the up-and-coming video game character after Mario the landlord. Mario – the character – appeared in Donkey Kong then as the protagonist. Since Donkey Kong was set on a construction site, Mario was made into a carpenter. When he appeared again in Mario Bros., it was decided that he should be a plumber, since much of the game was set in underground settings. Mario’s character design, especially his larger nose, draws on western influences. Once he became a plumber, creator Shigeru Miyamoto thought to “put him in New York and make him Italian.”

Over time, and with better graphics, Mario’s appearance became more defined. Blue eyes, white gloves (that’s a fancy plumber!), brown shoes, and a red “M” in a white circle on the front of his hat, and yellow-gold buttons on his overalls were added. The colors of his shirt and overalls were also reversed from a blue shirt with red overalls to red shirt with blue overalls. Even with all the appearance upgrades, and as Mario’s popularity rose and rose, Nintendo has never revealed his full name.

The full name doesn’t really matter, though. He’s Mario, the Italian plumber. Since his debut in Donkey Kong in 1981, Mario has gone on to star in the Super Mario platform games, as well as featuring in the Mario Kart racing series, sports games such as Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, RPGs such as Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, and educational games. The franchise is firmly entrenched in popular culture and has spawned, television shows, a live action film, comics, countless arrays of merchandise, endless memes, and dozens of references in other movies, television shows, comics, etc.

All memes and jokes aside, Mario is a perennial favorite, hitting the nostalgia buttons for older gamers, while still being completely current. And Mario is such a guy, what with his giant mustache and physique, that it’s extra fun when a gal pulls off an awesome genderbend Mario cosplay. For a perfect example, look no further than Kristen Lanae. Her Mario is just adorable and so much fun. We love how she’s taken the classic elements of Mario and adapted them into a cosplay that has plenty of “wink-wink” cheekiness to it. Kristen calls her femme Mario cosplay “Maria,” and we couldn’t love it more. The high-waisted shorts have a retro, pin-up girl esthetic, and the thigh high white stockings add sex appeal without being vampy. There’s such wonderful humor to this cosplay, not to mention that it’s wonderfully crafted and styled. The 8bit inspired Piranha Plant adds the perfect touch. Now go on, Kristen, find your princess (or prince)! Though, we have to warn you…she (or he) is in another castle.
