Avengers Age of Ultron

Avengers Age of Ultron Trailer Released Early Following Leak

So, instead of debuting next week alongside Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the first feature trailer for Avengers Age of Ultron managed to find its way online in a low-res leak. And Marvel, never wanting to be beat at their own game, decided to release the full version, 1080p trailer early to Youtube. Marvel once again proves that they know how to work their audience, evidenced by this pithy Tweet.

And the trailer is truly glorious. Certainly more than enough to give Marvel fans plenty to chew on for a few weeks at least.

The trailer seems to be first and foremost an introduction to the titular villain that has been attached to the Avengers sequel for months, Ultron. We open with a deep computerized narration describing the Avengers as limited, bound by duty, resistant to change, “puppets, tangled in strings”. By the end of the trailer the menacing voice makes a juxtaposed declaration, “There are no strings on me!” And we see the radiant silver and red face Ultron, the artificial intelligence determined to exterminate humanity and their superheroic Avengers. Hats off to James Spader.

I absolutely love the string theme. Some of the most affecting trailers I can remember in all modern entertainment is when the trailer takes a familiar, innocuous, innocent song, and turns it into something dark, twisted and ironic. I lap it up.

There was plenty of other intriguing images and scenes in the trailer. We see swarms of Ultron’s underling drones crawling out of a river. We see Ironman take on the Hulk in his Hulk-buster armor, we see Thor and Black Widow alone and in doubt. We get our first glimpses of Aaron Taylor Johnson as Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch. There’s also Hawkeye sneaking through the tundra in a short trench coat and a single shot of Andy Serkis in an unknown role. And Ballerinas doing tow stands? Whatever.

We also get a glimpse of Captain American laying in a pile of rubble with his iconic shield broken in half right down the middle. What could have done that?!

Watch the trailer again and again for yourself below and get ready for Avengers Age of Ultron in theaters next May.
