‘Avengers: Infinity War’ to be Shot in IMAX

IMAX, Marvel Studios, the Russo brothers have announced that Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity WarParts 1 & 2 will be shot completely in IMAX, making them the first big Hollywood features to be filmed entirely with IMAX cameras.

The two-part conclusion to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe will make use of IMAX’s next generation digital camera, which is a customized version of ARRI’s new large format camera, the Alexa 65. It’s a bold move for Avengers: Infinity War, which promises to be huge at the box office.

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Review

Said the Russo brothers:

“The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.

Not intent to wait until Infinity War, the Russos are going to try out the new IMAX cameras by shooting select scenes from Captain America: Civil War in the large format, a first for a Marvel movie.

IMAX Senior Vice President Greg Foster said in a statement, “Marvel’s Avengers franchise has become a global phenomenon and to have it pay off in this epic way using the IMAX/ARRI digital camera is the very definition of event movie-going.”

Filmmakers are incorporating IMAX with more frequency, to keep up with moviegoers’ increasing appetite for an immersive cinematic experience. Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War seems an ideal project for this technology, with an aim to offer Marvel fans the ultimate epic viewing experience.

Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1 hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Part 2 released May 3, 2019.
