Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

Disney Announces Indiana Jones 5 With Harrison Ford

Well, so much for Chris Pratt Indy, for now.

When George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney, the film rights to Indiana Jones also came with the deal. Disney’s not one to let their properties go to waste. The studio announced today that a fifth Indiana Jones movie is targeted for a July 2019 release, with Steven Spielberg directing and Harrison Ford once again as the two-fisted archaeologist.

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios, in a statement. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

5 Epic Plot Ideas for ‘Indiana Jones 5’

I remember a few months ago when Spielberg himself said that there would never be an Indiana Jones other than Harrison Ford. Looks like he means business. We’ve already had the nostalgia trip for this franchise though! Crystal Skull was so bleh! What are they going to do to make this fifth Indy film with Ford worthwhile?

They did manage to make Ford’s late game Han Solo work in Force Awakens, however. But Indiana Jones has always been a much more physically demanding role. Has Ford still got the action chops? Now in his late 70s it would be damn impressive.

No word on who will write the script for Indy 5. The story will be key to making this work. We’ll have to see if this franchise can prove that it doesn’t yet belong in a museum by Summer 2019.
