HIMYM Season 9 Episode 22 "The End of the Aisle"

How I Met Your Mother S9/E22 Review: “The End of the Aisle”

We finally arrived at the last episode of HIMYM before the hour long season finale. It’s been a long, winding, emotional roller coaster of a road. I am both happy and sad to see the show end. Happy that it had such a strong run with a whopping 9 seasons, but sad that a show full of characters I spent so much time with are finally leaving us. Sadly, I don’t think “The End of the Aisle” was a particularly good end for the regular episodes, but since it wasn’t the actual finale I feel somewhat forgiving.

How I Met Your Mother S9/E21 Review: “Gary Blauman”

The main issue with this episode was simply that it spent far too much time on the rehash of Robin and Ted’s romantic storyline. Now I realize that this needed to come to a conclusion, but I really thought most of this episode would be centered on the wedding, and not on the sappy melodrama of Robin and Ted. It’s something we have seen over and over. We know it wasn’t going to go anywhere. We knew Robin and Barney would still get married and that Ted would meet The Mother. It just seemed like a big waste of an episode, paying that much attention to it, and a mere few minutes at the end on the wedding ceremony itself.

On the other side of the episode away from Robin and Ted was a fun but again somewhat rehash of Barney’s anxieties towards marriage. He tries to write his wedding vows and consults Marshall and Lily for advice. I think this plot’s heart was in the right place but, again, we have seen Barney freak out enough about the wedding. It’s going to happen and we know it’s going to happen so why not just get to it and stop pussyfooting around?

I must admit that, while the majority of this season worked for me, it is episodes like “The End of the Aisle” that show the hindrance of focusing an entire season around a singular event. A lot of the time it worked well and gave us some of the shows most heartfelt moments. On the other hand, since they stretched the wedding out to the very end, it seems like the writers were running out of ideas. Because most episodes did work for me, I will say it’s been a great season, and I’m happy about where things are going. At the same time, you just can’t help but wish for a little bit more.

How I Met Your Mother is soon to get a spin off series and I assume that is the “more” we will be treated to. I don’t know yet how closely related the two shows are going to be, or if they will go along similar story lines, but I do hope that if they choose to go through with How I Met Your Father that they treat it with the same respect and dignity How I Met Your Mother has received all these years. “The End of the Aisle” is one of my least favorite episodes of the season because it dealt with plot lines I was already so used to seeing. On the other hand, I find myself so overjoyed with HIMYM as a whole, that I forgive its minor faults. Next week is going to Legen- wait for it -Dary! Legendary! At least I hope it is.
