James Gunn Talks Guardians of the Galaxy Dancing Groot and Drax Scene

There were a lot of memorable scenes and characters in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Undoubtedly, one of the most popular favorites is at the end when the regenerating baby Groot is rocking out to the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back.” The scene also included a brooding Drax, cleaning off his knife. He turns to look at baby Groot who freezes just in time for Drax to see nothing.

Why exactly did Groot stop dancing until Drax looked away again? According to director James Gunn, Drax caught sight of Groot dancing once before in a deleted scene.

While guesting on Doug Loves Movies Podcast, Gunn confesses, “’There was actually a scene that we cut from the movie where big Groot was dancing to ‘Livin’ Thing’ by ELO. And it wasn’t such an elaborate dance. It was more that he was just moving up and down like this, and Drax was dismissive and gave him this look like he was a loser when he did that….Dancing is ludicrous to Drax. I don’t think he understands it. If Drax owned a town, if he was a mayor, the first law would be no dancing. But yeah, so at the end of the movie, little baby Groot didn’t want to get caught dancing, because he would kill him.”

I say the scene still worked without the context of this previous embarrassment. Drax’s disdain for what he perceives as frivolous is clear enough and Groot’s happiness is just as clear personally and thematically. I just hope we get to see more of Groot dancing in the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 come May 7th, 2017.  Watch the adorable scene again below!
