New Studio Ghibli Film ‘When Marnie Was There’ Has Voice Cast, US Release Date

The next film produced by Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli now has a release date and an English-language voice cast.

Deadline reports the film, titled When Marnie Was There will premiere in US theaters on May 22 of this year. The voice cast includes Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), John C. Reilly, Geena Davis, Vanessa Williams, Kathy Bates, Ellen Burstyn, and Catherine O’Hara, among others.

The film is the sophomore effort from director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who previously directed Ghibli’s 2012 release The Secret World of Arrietty. Yonebayashi is part of a new generation of animators taking the studio’s reigns after the departures of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.

When Marnie Was There reportedly follows a young girl who makes an unusual friend named Marnie after moving to a foster home in a Japanese seaside town. You can watch the original Japanese trailer below.
