Report: Nintendo Switch Will Link Your Digital Purchases To Your Account

In what appears to be some very good news, it would appear that the upcoming Nintendo Switch will tie all of your eShop purchases to your Nintendo Account. While this may not seem like a big deal, if true, it would be in complete contrast to both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, where your games were tied to the system, meaning that if your console was broken, lost or stolen, you were mostly out of luck.

The news comes from Eurogamer, who themselves discovered it from an unboxing video for the console, which besides showing the console, also went over the menus and UI. It was during this look at the menu that one eagle-eyed Twitter user by the name of Bjoern the Switchy discovered the following disclaimer:

“Your Nintendo Account contains your Nintendo eShop purchase history and current balance. By re-linking your Nintendo Account after initializing the console, it will be possible to redownload any software or DLC purchased using that account. (Software that has been discontinued may not be available to redownload in some cases.)”

Now, I know a lot of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners are probably scoffing at this wondering why it’s a big deal, since they’ve been able to do it for years. And yeah, you’re totally right; this should have been in Nintendo’s consoles sooner. But regardless, it’s something that Nintendo fans have wanted for years, and it’s here now, which means no longer having to go to Nintendo themselves to get your games back if something were to happen to the system.

The Nintendo Switch will release on March 3rd worldwide.
