Sony Addresses God of War: Ascension Trophy Controversy

It seems even Kratos has limits. While Kratos and the ever epic ‘God of War’ franchise are no strangers to some level of controversy due to the nature of the franchise’s mature rated content, last week saw the dawn of one that hits right at the heart of the roller coaster that is mature rated games and the oft argued position that sexism runs rampant in the industry. ‘Bros before Hos’ was revealed to be the title of one of the Trophies that could be unlocked in God of War: Ascension, this revelation stirred outrage at Sony and the popular franchise.

In a statement released to the press, Sony Santa Monica said “We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies”. They acknowledged “The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game. We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we’ve addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question.”

The Trophy title will be changed to ‘Bros before Foes’. No date was given on when the patch would be released, but the question that remains is, is the damage already done? It’s not the first time such a controversy has fired up the gaming industry, and if one is to pay attention to history, the answer to the question would seem to be a resounding ‘No’. While the public may latch on to these things, it seems the gamers who vote with their wallets tend to keep to the franchises they enjoy as game sales never seem to be truly negatively affected by such events, more often than not, garnering more free press than anything else.

God of War: Ascension, is Developed by Sony Santa Monica and will be released, today, March12th 2013, exclusively for PlayStation 3.
