The Last Guardian’s Creator Is Interested In VR

It’s taken a few years, but The Last Guardian was finally released. But what’s next for creator Fumito Ueda? Well, the answer is VR, but don’t expect anything to come from it anytime soon.

“If I were to release Shadow of the Colossus for PSVR, I would feel a responsibility to create something that goes beyond the expectations of the fan base,” Ueda said in an interview with Glixel, talking about the possibility of taking the beloved PlayStation 2 game and making it for VR. “It wouldn’t be enough to just make a game where you’re standing at the feet of a colossus.”

However, while that may please fans, Ueda doesn’t think that the game would be a good fit for VR, simply because the nature of VR games have players standing still so as to avoid motion sickness; a game like Shadow of the Colossus, where the whole point is climbing, grabbing, and getting thrown around, that would be a problem.

“The biggest problem with VR, I’ve heard, seems to be that the motion makes people feel sick,” Ueda explained. “So I don’t know if it would really be a good match. I don’t have the confidence that we’d be able to overcome that problem.”

However, easily the biggest hurdle that Ueda has with VR is that the market just doesn’t seem all that profitable at the moment, as he has “the responsibility to make sure that it makes business sense”. “So, in that sense, I haven’t found the right balance or realistic solution to make it happen,” Ueda concluded.

The Last Guardian is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
