Watch Dogs is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2014, but beyond the chaos of hacking rich bankers bank accounts and chasing criminals through the streets the team at Ubisoft Montreal are trying to make people more aware of their digital footprint and the potential dangers they put themselves in, in the digital world. Speaking with Joystiq an unnamed member of the team said, “People should question technology and their relationship to it, the more we put ourselves in the online world the easier it is to be exploited, and many people are completely blind to how fast their world is changing.”

The PlayStation community received a rude awakening when an external intrusion forced SONY to shut down the PSN for a staggering 24 days back in 2011. 77 million accounts were stolen in the attack and to this day it stands as one of the largest data security breaches in history. According to the team any information a player can steal from characters in the game is not that much harder to steal in real life and the games Hollywood styled bypass system used for hacking into cell phones and personal computers is actually based on technology that is available in real life.

At a first glance you would be forgiven for thinking that Watch Dogs is based on paranoid science fiction novels from the 1980′s, but you must acknowledge that in reality it is firmly grounded in the present.”We are inspired by Anonymous as well as state-sponsored hackers and the tales of corporate espionage but we decided to create fictitious factions for the game.” In a recent trailer for the game DedSec LulzSec’s Watch Dogs counterpart help guide the player to safety using their logo as a way of marking potential escape routes and environmental effects that protagonist Aiden Pierce can interact with.

Watch Dogs is due out in the second quarter of 2014 on Windows PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and even the Wii U.
