According to reports from Variety, the actors vying to play the lead in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII include Ed Speelers (Downton Abbey), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) and theater actors Mathew James Thomas and Ray Fisher. The role, supposedly that of a Jedi apprentice, seems set to spar with a villain played by Adam Driver of Girls fame and star alongside original trilogy staples Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.

Abrams and studio executives are reportedly aiming for a more diversified cast of characters and are evidently considering a non-Caucasian actor to play the lead as opposed to previous Star Wars films.

Abrams is expected to have Episode VII feature the original trilogy characters more than the new generation. Although, if that’s the case, one has to wonder just what the nature of this “lead” character will be, since all of the candidates seem to be young, up and coming stars. Much else having to do with the first installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, from plot to character details, remains speculation. Fans are sure to mull over every little detail Disney and Abrams decide to preview, and have plenty to say once the new trilogy begins.

“Star Wars: Episode 7” to Begin Filming In May

Star Wars Episode VII is scheduled to begin filming in the late second or early third quarter in London’s Pinewood Studios and is set to debut in theaters on December 18, 2015.
