Broken Age Getting A Season Pass, But No Early Access

It’s a typical, “do you want the good news, or bad news” scenario for indie developers Double Fine. After the much anticipated Kickstarter, Broken Age made its way to its sought after goal of $400,000, Double Fine was preparing themselves to start work on the newest point and click adventure. So, as word from a recently released blog update, it seems that some of those paid for benefits may come colored in a different shade.

As today’s blog update noted, the developer had originally planned on a Steam early release benefit. The cloud based, pc atmosphere is, in fact, a big part of why the title, far surpassed its goal. Seeing as Steam has a growing following, and often is a go to source for most pc gamers’, it’s sad to note that no longer will Broken Age release early. Instead, as written on the blog, Broken Age will no come in the form of a Season pass. Offering part 1 as a pay in full model and later, offering part 2 for free. The post states, “For various logistical reasons, and because we believe Act 1 is a polished and satisfying piece of content in its own right, Broken Age will be a standard Steam release that includes a ‘Season Pass’ granting access to Act 2 once it is complete. Anyone who has Act 1 — either by being a backer, or by buying the game separately — will receive Act 2 as a free update when it’s ready.”

Seemingly brushing aside the notion that, early access was a benefit for most backers, Double Fine still gave us no information on the games release date. Promised however on January 12th, Double Fine will hopefully go into more detail as to why the early release window was in fact changed, and if possible, what the benefit replacing said offer, if any, will be.
