Overwatch’s Seasonal Events May Become Playable Year Round

Are you bummed that you missed out on Overwatch’s seasonal events, specifically the cosmetic items that could only be unlocked during said event? If so, there may be hope yet, as the events may become playable year round in the Arcade options.

“One was to allow ‘All Heroes’ to play the event. It might not seem hard but there were a lot of edge case/bug fixes for us to handle,” Overwatch’s director Jeff Kaplan wrote in a forum post discussing some of the challenges that go into making the custom game modes (courtesy of PVP Live). “The other goal was to put Uprising into Custom Game during the event. There were enough challenges technically with doing this that we ended up not achieving this goal.”

These modes tend to disappear whenever the event ends, but according to Kaplan, it’s possible that these events could become year round, though don’t expect it anytime soon. “We might someday make Seasonal Events available when the events are not running, but for now, it’s not a priority due to the technical challenge”, Kaplan said. “We also do like keeping the events rare and special… (I know people hate when I say that…)”

On one hand, I think it would ruin the appeal of certain modes like the PvE event for Halloween or the Christmas snowball fight with Mei if they were year around. On the other hand, events like Uprising, which is going on now, really help build the world of Overwatch and it would actually be pretty cool to make it part of the main game year round.
