Strong Museum Of Play Announces 15 Finalists For It’s Video Game Hall Of Fame
The Rochester Strong Museum of Play has announced 15 finalist to potentially join last years Hall of Fame inductees. This is the second year of the museum’s video game hall of fame.
Last year, these titles were added:
- Doom
- Pac-Man
- Pong
- Super Mario Bros.
- Tetris
- World of Warcraft
Some of the new titles are repeat titles that were unable to get in last year. The entire list consists of these 15 titles:
- Elite
- Final Fantasy
- Grand Theft Auto III
- John Madden Football
- The Legend of Zelda
- Minecraft
- Nurburgring
- The Oregon Trail
- Pokémon Red and Green
- Sid Meier’s Civilization
- The Sims
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Space Invaders
- Street Fighter II
- Tomb Raider
Pokemon, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, and Space Invaders are all in their second year of consideration. The winners will be announced Thursday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m Eastern Time in Rochester, New York. The winners will be selected by a panel of academics, journalists, and others knowledgeable or involved in the video game business.
In order to qualify for consideration, a game’s status as an icon, its longevity, geographical reach, influence on other games, entertainment, or pop culture are all criteria. According to the Strong Museum, the final criterion can be considered even if the other three have not been met. From The Legend of Zelda to Minecraft, there are some strong games on the list this year and it will be very interesting to see which ones make the final cut.
