Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox to Play Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Rocky Horror Picture Show Remake

This is an inspired move.

Fox’s announcement of a live TV Musical Event remake of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show was met with plenty of skepticism and reserved judgement. After all, the original still holds up today as a trippy, shadow-casting friendly, pulp-sci-fi sexual romp of a good time. All the usual sentimental arguments against remakes notwithstanding, we knew that the remake has original executive producer Lou Adler on board and Kenny Ortega would direct.

But now, oh boy now, we have our front and center lead, the sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Played by none other than Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox.

This is the kind of casting that would take the production from the mire of a potentially disappointing curiosity to something actually entertaining and relevant. A beloved sexually ambiguous character played by one of the most high profile Trans actors in the States. Cox has some incredibly fierce boots to fill in Tim Curry’s role, but she’s undoubtedly up to it.

Keep your eyes on this one going forward. Here’s the official synopsis; THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW follows sweethearts Janet Weiss and Brad Majors, who stumble upon Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s bizarre abode. Frank-N-Furter, a sexually ambiguous flirtatious alien mad-scientist, is holding an annual, Transylvanian science convention to showcase the birth of “Rocky Horror” – a fit, attractive man created solely to fulfill Frank’s desires.

The show is scheduled to air Fall 2016.
