Steven Spielberg clearly has a lot on his plate, between promoting War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin, not to mention production for the upcoming Lincoln starring Daniel Day-Lewis. It’s not much of a shock, then, that Spielberg has confirmed to Collider that he will not helm Jurassic Park 4. In the interview, Spielberg insists that he will produce, but not direct the sequel.

Spielberg was quoted as saying:

“I don’t want to talk about Jurassic Park 4 yet – it’s too early – but I can tell you that I’m not directing it. I’m producing it though.”

Spielberg’s disclosure is causing many to speculate that the director for Jurassic Park 4 will be Joe Johnston, who directed Jurassic Park 3. Johnston recently revealed the following information about the dinosaur-driven sequel to Screen Rant:

“The most important thing I can tell you is that (Jurassic Park 4) starts a new trilogy that will go off in a different direction — a completely different direction that is very exciting, and different from anything we’ve seen. It starts with the history of the first trilogy, but it spins it off in a completely different direction. That’s all I can tell you.”

Based on Johnston’s comments, it seems likely that Jurassic Park 4 will be more of a reboot than a sequel. Even though Steven Spielberg will not be in the director’s chair, his role in the production provides some hope that the finished product will live up to audience expectations.

What are your thoughts on a Jurassic Park reboot?
